Green Wednesday Is the Second-Biggest Day in Cannabis. Most Stores Pay for It in Margin.

Market Analysis · By Headquarters · October 21, 2026

Green Wednesday is now the second-biggest sales day in legal cannabis. On November 26, 2025, U.S. dispensaries tracked by Headset sold $114.0 million, about 1.7 times an average day, behind only 4/20. Black Friday came third at $108.1 million.

This year it falls on November 25. The top-line number will look great again. The problem is what it costs to get there: the discounts are the deepest of the year, and the days around it give back part of the lift. A store can post its best Wednesday of the year and still earn less gross profit than it would on an ordinary one.

The spike is real. So is the discount.

BDSA's 2024 numbers show where the extra sales come from. Green Wednesday delivered 66% more sales than a non-holiday day, with 1.5 times the transactions per store, baskets 1.1 times larger and 1.2 times more items per basket. The average discount depth was 28.65%, the deepest of any holiday period that year.

Run that through a simple product. An item lists at $40 and costs $20, a 50% margin at full price. At 28.65% off, it sells for $28.54 and earns $8.54 of gross profit instead of $20. To earn the same gross profit dollars as a normal day, the store needs 2.3 times the units. Green Wednesday's traffic and basket lift deliver about 1.8 times (1.5 times the transactions, 1.2 times the items). If that discount ran storewide, the record day would produce roughly 23% less gross profit than an average one.

Not every item is discounted that deeply, and margins vary by store. But the math shows why volume alone is the wrong goal for November 25.

On the East Coast, units are growing faster than dollars

New York shows the pattern most clearly. The state's Office of Cannabis Management reported that Green Wednesday 2025 sales rose 24.5% over 2024 while units sold rose 56.1%. That works out to about 20% less revenue per unit than the year before. The week of November 23-29 was still the highest sales week on record in the state.

In New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Green Wednesday is close to a second 4/20. BDSA measured a 116% lift in New Jersey (4/20 was 121%) and 123% in Pennsylvania (4/20 was 128%). Operators in those markets should staff and stock for it the way they do for April.

The week around it pays for part of it

Headset's analysis of 2023 found that Thanksgiving Day sales fall by as much as 70% compared with a normal Thursday, and that total sales for Thanksgiving week came in 8% below the average of the four weeks before it. The average discount rose from 17.9% to 25% that week.

Some of the Green Wednesday spike is customers buying on Wednesday what they would have bought later in the week anyway, at a lower price. Judge the event by the week's gross profit, not the day's revenue.

Retailers: discount narrowly, sell more per basket

Pick door-busters, not a storewide percentage. A few deep deals on high-traffic SKUs bring people in. A flat 30% across the menu gives margin away on items customers would have bought anyway.

Lean on edibles and vapes. Edibles had the biggest Green Wednesday lift in BDSA's data at 17%. In New York, both edibles and vapes hit their highest month of 2025 in December, according to Cova's category data. Inventory bought for Green Wednesday keeps selling through the holidays.

Build bundles that raise items per basket. The 1.2-times items lift is where margin can be won back. A bundle at a moderate discount beats a single item at a deep one.

Watch menu pricing. BDSA found flower menu prices rose 3% before the holiday and still sold through 5% below normal. Customers notice prices that go up the week before a sale.

Brands: agree on the terms before November 25

Retailers often ask brands to help fund holiday discounts. The details decide whether it's a promotion or a margin leak.

Put the mechanics in writing. What share of the discount the brand funds, on which SKUs, for which dates, with a dollar cap, and paid by credit memo or invoice deduction. Promo credits agreed on a phone call turn into January deductions nobody can reconcile.

Tie funding to sell-through data. Ask for SKU-level units sold during the promotion window before issuing the credit, not just the retailer's total.

Plan the receivable. Net-30 orders placed in early November come due in December, after the discounts have already cut into retailers' margins. In New York, that collides with the state's payment rules. Know which accounts are current before shipping them extra product.

What to measure on November 30

  • Gross profit for Thanksgiving week compared with the average of the four prior weeks, not revenue for the day
  • Revenue per unit compared with Green Wednesday 2025
  • Discount depth by category
  • Items per basket
  • How many first-time Green Wednesday customers come back in December

Green Wednesday is now on the Q4 calendar alongside the year-end close. Treat it as a margin plan, not a sales goal, and the second-biggest day of the year can also be a profitable one.
